State of the Marsh



The first episode of the series provided an overview of the issue and featured guest Bob Marshall, Outdoors Editor of the Times Picayune and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. In 2007 Marshall was co-author of the series entitled “Last Chance: The Fight to Save a Disappearing Coast,” which brought much needed attention to Louisiana’s coastal erosion problems and won the 2007 John H. Oakes Prize for Distinguished Environmental Reporting from Columbia University.

The second episode explored the financial impacts caused by the destruction of Louisiana’s wetlands and looked at the political logjams preventing large-scale restoration efforts with guest R. King Milling. Milling is the Chairman of Governor Bobby Jindal’s Advisory Commission on Coastal Protection and Restoration and Chairman of the Board for the America’s WETLAND Foundation. He was recently awarded the prestigious Times-Picayune’s Loving Cup and the National Wildlife Federation’s Conversationalist of the Year.

For the third episode, Bruno invited Amanda Moore from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) onto the show to teach the viewers the steps to become more actively engaged in the fight to restore Louisiana’s coast. Amanda, the Community Organizer in New Orleans for NWF, demonstrated that political advocacy is much easier and less intimidating than many of us believe, and reviewed the various tools available to citizens for contacting their elected officials.

The fourth episode features footage from the wetlands and a narrative by returning guest Bob Marshall, Outdoor Editor for the Times Picayune. Marshall is joined back in the studio by Times Picayune Environmental Reporter Mark Schleifstein. The reporters examine the bureaucratic hold ups within the Army Corps of Engineers and the Water Resources Development Act—the Congressional Approval process for Army Corps projects, that are preventing the implementation of the large-scale, comprehensive projects needed to restore Louisiana’s wetlands.
